In her nearly 60-year career, Cher has proven that you don’t need to belong or be accepted by either group when you can just create the genre of “Cher.” That genre is marked by her distinct voice, self-deprecating sense of humor, and, above all else, her unparalleled performance abilities. On her latest tour, which follows the release of her ABBA tribute album Dancing Queen, Cher continues to prove that she can wipe the floor with any pop star from any generation before or after her.

Who is Cher?

Cher, otherwise known as the Goddess of Pop, has been hugely successful and influential in both the music and movie industries. She gained popularity as half of the folk-pop duo Sonny & Cher alongside her then husband Sonny Bono, particularly with their song I Got You Babe. She is also known for solo songs such as Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) and Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves, which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Her career experienced a huge revival in 1998 when she released the dance-pop album and single Believe. She has appeared in films including Moonstruck, The Witches of Eastwick and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, and is also known for her extravagant costumes and sets on stage.

Cher – Awards

Cher has won a huge amount of prestigious awards as both a singer and actress. She was named Best Actress at the Academy Awards in 1988 for her role in Moonstruck, along with taking home the Best Actress In A Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy Golden Globe. Her smash hit single Believe won the best dance recording Grammy in 2000, and I Got You Babe was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2017. Believe also won the Billboard Award for Hot 100 Single Of The Year in 1999, and Cher won the Artist Achievement Award at the Billboards in 2002, followed up by the Icon Award in 2017.

How did Cher get famous?

As a child, Cher was always interested in music and stagecraft, producing a version of Oklahoma! In fifth grade for her class. As an adult, she aimed to be famous and dropped out of school at sixteen before moving to Los Angeles. She began her career as a backup singer and released a couple of solo singles before striking it big with I Got You Babe as half of Sonny & Cher, now known as one of the most beloved songs of all time. Her style became iconic and the duo sold 40 million records by the end of 1967. Although their star faded, she made a solo comeback in 1971 with the huge hit Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves.
